Curtis McKinley Hairston, Sr.

Curtis M. Hairston, Sr., a lifelong resident of Martinsville, VA passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.  He was born on October 7, 1935 to the late Henry Marshall and Lillie Belle Carter Hairston. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Hillard "Bookie" Hairston.

Curtis graduated from G. W. Carver High School in Martinsville, VA and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, before receiving his master's degree from the University of Virginia.

He was an educator in the Henry County public schools for more than thirty years, where he taught and coached at G. W. Carver High School and Drewry Mason High School before retiring in 1992 as the director of the Henry County driving range.  He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, N E A and V E A. After retirement his favorite activity was watching his beloved Dodgers.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years. Katherine Smith Hairston; one son, Curtis M. (Janice) Hairston, Jr., three granddaughters. Justina Threadgill, Jordan Hairston and Cara Hairston as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 21, 2023 at 12:00 PM at First Baptist Church - East Martinsville with Rev. Charles R. Whitfield, officiating.  Burial will be private.  The family will receive friends at the church one half hour prior to the funeral and will be at the home at 200 John Spencer Road, Martinsville, VA at other times.
